rumor control – As Seen Through PeriVision https://www.perivision.net/wordpress An Mobile centric blog ... Full of Tech goodness Wed, 26 Feb 2014 01:40:37 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.3 4666035 Rumors of a larger iphone 6 most likely true, and here is why. https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2014/02/rumors-of-a-larger-iphone-6-most-likely-true-and-here-is-why/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2014/02/rumors-of-a-larger-iphone-6-most-likely-true-and-here-is-why/#respond Sun, 16 Feb 2014 00:00:38 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=9247 Read More]]> iphone6Funny enough, a few days back I wrote a post on how I thought my iphone 4 looked small compared to my Samsung. Too small in fact. Sure I can still use it, but the difference is very noticeable. Then later that even Mashable broke a story with leaks images of the iphone 6 that is suppose to come in two larger sizes. I would bet they will only do 1 larger size. However according to Macrumers, these images are most likely fake.

Update: A few readers have pointed out why they believe these images to be fake: repeating textures, wrong font, copied texture.

The important point here is that there is a very good reason why Apple will make the iphone 6 larger. Once you use a larger phone, its almost impossible to go back. It’s funny how my phone now looks ‘cute’. I also think they will keep the current iphone 5s screen-size as well. Not sure how they will deal with naming.

The only question now is; what size will the iphone 6 be? I have been using the galaxy III for a awhile and the size is good. I thought about getting a note and seeing if I can stretch it one more size up, but I’m already starting to hit the limits of my pockets for easy placement and retrieval. If I was going to place a bet, I would say it will be close to the 4.8 galaxy. Well see as we get closer to a new phone.

Spreading rumors through the Apple community, a clinical approach https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/08/spreading-rumors-through-the-apple-community-a-clinical-approach/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/08/spreading-rumors-through-the-apple-community-a-clinical-approach/#respond Mon, 13 Aug 2012 23:29:18 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=7693 Read More]]> The news is moving through the blogs now, so I will assume you already know that the ‘new’ asymmetric screw was a fake. This happen quite a bit with Apple, especially around new iphone / ipad releases. But what was different about this rumor was the post analysis by the guys who started the rumor in the first place.

Check out the Day4 blog for more detail, but here is the basic summery.

They created a fake fact, an asymmetric, mocked it up in CADD and then emailed an image to themselves. They then uploaded this to Reddit. And waited. It did not take long. 12 hours in fact.

Less than 12 hours later it had happened. First came Apple blog Cult of Mac, who reported ”Apple May Be Working On A Top Secret Asymmetric Screw To Lock You Out Of Your Devices Forever” and then it just went on. More and more blogs wrote about the alleged leaks from Apple headquarters in Cupertino, USA. Yahoo, Wired and MacWorld jumped on. On Twitter, numerous posts raged about the issue. On YouTube, people made video blogs about the new screw. Google + talked about it page after page. Try it yourself, go to www.google.se and search on ”asymmetric screw”.

What is interesting is that many posts were skeptical in the beginning, but as the rumor moved further from the source, and more people were commenting about its impact, and less about its validity, the less the validity was even called into question.

The split between the two camps, was quite unequal. An estimate would be that 90% regarded the screw as a fact and based all the further opinion on that, only 10% were critical to accuracy.

I want to call out Eric_E for calling BS on this. An upvote for you good sir.

I’m going call shenanigans. I deal with fruit company tools and reverse engineering them. When a new screw comes out, I start taking microscope photos of it, and consulting with tool manufacturers on how to defeat it. This would be difficult to use in a mass production setting (driver alignment and bit life in a factory). The fastener could also be defeated with a Flathead screwdriver, since it has so asymmetrical lobes that enough line up close enough to bridge across. A Pentalobe fastener cannot be defeated this way, there is no place to bridge across with a different type of driver.

Rumor control: $149 high power tablet https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/03/rumor-control-149-high-power-tablet/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/03/rumor-control-149-high-power-tablet/#respond Sun, 18 Mar 2012 19:18:13 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=6943 Read More]]> Well we know its just a matter of time before we have a sub $100 tablet, but most of us expect it to be a race to the bottom for creating a tablet powerful enough to be useful, but only ‘just’ powerful enough.

Well break out the rumor books, looks like Google is pushing to bring out a $149 powerful tablet. Yes, a fully functional tablet for less then $150 bucks. It does make sense when you think of it. Apple’s new ‘THE’ iPad is pushing to limits of how nice and powerful a tablet can be, and there is the race to the bottom for the cheapest and barely useable tablet, so it makes perfect sense that google wants to make sure the mid range tablet is an Android tablet specially considering the coming storm of demand for tablets in education.

Again, rumor control, but here is what I read onandroidandme.

What’s most surprising about the latest rumor is to hear that the target price has been lowered to $149 and that the quad-core Tegra 3 processor is out. I’m going to assume these two bits are related.

It sounds like Google wanted to undercut the Kindle Fire, so they lowered the bill of materials by going with a processor that was cheaper than Tegra 3. We heard similar stories last year that Amazon had originally chosen Tegra 2 to power the Kindle Fire, but they went with Texas Instruments’ OMAP4 at the last moment because they got a better volume deal.

So there you go. I will be keeping an eye out and if someone can put a nice tablet in front of me for 150, yea, I may jump on it.

Adobe flash (AS3) to iPhone back from the dead? https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2010/05/adobe-flash-as3-to-iphone-back-from-the-dead/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2010/05/adobe-flash-as3-to-iphone-back-from-the-dead/#comments Wed, 05 May 2010 06:44:48 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=2952 Read More]]> This is SERIOUSLY rumor control, but I’ve read on electronista and a few other sites that Apple may change the iphone4.0 SDK to avoid a possible FTC antitrust investigation.

Now this does not mean flash will be on the iphone or ipad any time soon, or anytime I figure short of going through jailbreak, but the possibility that Flash programmers using AS3 may be able to compile their code to work on the iPhone / iPad. This would be great news if the rumors come true. Now how much did Adobe have to do with getting the FTC to look at this issue and move on it we do not know, but this could be a great win for Adobe as well as the tons of ActionScript programmers out there.

Now what are the odds of this actually going through? Actually pretty good. I never thought the reason for blocking other SDK’s was weak and the business win was pretty limited. Now that does not mean you still would not have to buy a sdk license, so there are still blocks or at least hurdles Apple can put in the way, but it pain the FTC could cause may not be worth it. We’ll see, and my fingers are crossed!

Not sure what I’m talking about? Get the back story here.

Whats new with the iphone 4? BIG clue from a lost phone https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2010/04/whats-new-with-the-iphone-4-big-clue-from-a-lost-phone/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2010/04/whats-new-with-the-iphone-4-big-clue-from-a-lost-phone/#comments Mon, 19 Apr 2010 21:21:31 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=2893 Read More]]> I’m sure most of you have already heard the news of the lost next gen iphone 4.0. Well Gizmodo got their hands on it, took it apart and have posted up what goodness we can expect from the new iphone

From Gizmodo

There are some things that I had thought back in March (last year) we might see on the new iphone. Well, here are a year later and low and behold, we are getting lots of what we hoped for. Now the interesting thing is HOW we know this. Seems someone given the task to take the new phone out into the wild and test LOST IT in a bar! Hmm.. I wonder if that person is working for Apple anymore? But I digress..

This ‘found’ phone was disguised to look like a normal 3G with rounded case. However, this was a special case with extra holes and a course a bit larger to hid the fact that the iphone4 does not have rounded edges. When it was found, it was still active so it has 4.0 running on it, but Apple killed the phone before they had enough time to see what was really different.

The big changes in my opinion is the camera on the front. Which you KNOW means we will have video conference and we also know the first feature they hype when the first commercial comes out. Next is FLASH… No, the THAT flash, but flash for the camera. Finally. 🙂 From what Gizmoto says, the screen is of MUCH higher resolution. Can we say HD’ish support? Although, I always thought the resolution was good enough. I will be excited to see this new high def version. Finally, a much larger batter. 16% larger? Why? Hmm.. perhaps to power a dual core CPU?

So from the good people at Gixmodo, lets have the list of what we know and a Video! For more screenshots, check out the original post linked at the top of this post.

What’s new

• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It’s unclear if it’s the 960×640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the “Connect to iTunes” screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What’s changed

• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

I could not embed the link directly to Gizmodo, so here is SoldierKnowsBest take on it.

A firefox browser in iphone? Perhaps not, but what if… https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/10/a-firefox-browser-in-iphone-perhaps-not/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/10/a-firefox-browser-in-iphone-perhaps-not/#respond Mon, 19 Oct 2009 03:17:57 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=2163 Read More]]> firefox on iphoneOm Malik from GigaOm started a rumor (and I only say rumor to be safe) that Mozilla is planning something for the iphone. Now the first thought is; “Hey! Firefox on the iphone! ” Yeah. As sweet as that would be, and you bet it would be sweet because the browsing experience on the iphone could use an update, I don’t think its going to happen. We already know how protective Apple is about any functionality that comes close to what Apple considers ‘native’ functionality. So if there is not going to be a replacement for safari, then would could it be? Well, what if it was an overlay of safari that brought Firefox functionality? And what if that functionality was Weave and the AwesomeBar? Sure, I can see that. But lets go one step further. What if we had access to Xmarks? NOW were talking! If Mozilla came out with just those 3 features; Weave, AwesomeBar and Xmarks, I would love it! That still does not address other issues I have with the browser, like forcing a page refresh when I switch between pages, but I will call it an upgrade non the less.

Note: Does anyone out there know why sometime when switching between webpages on safari, it sometimes refreshes that page, and sometimes not?

Rumor: there will NOT be an 8G iphone 3gs anytime soon. Sigh.. https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/08/rumor-there-will-not-be-an-8g-iphone-3gs-anytime-soon-sigh/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/08/rumor-there-will-not-be-an-8g-iphone-3gs-anytime-soon-sigh/#respond Mon, 10 Aug 2009 16:48:55 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=1881 Read More]]> I made up my mind that I would get the new iphone 3gs despite the REALLY bad service I’m currently getting from AT&T. How I made my decision will be another post, but I’m going to take a leap of faith that if AT&T can fix the poor cell service issue once, they can do it again. However, unlike most iphone users, I do not have an issue with having 8 Gigs of memory on the iphone. I do not play movies, and only keep perhaps 3-4 gigs of music max. Normally around 2-3 gigs. So I have plenty of space for short video clips and images. I also do a good job of moving media off my phone as soon as possible. (I use Discover mostly).

So I was pretty bummed when I read in Gizmodo that there will not be an 8G 3gs. Sure, the current understanding from Apple was that there was not an 8G ‘at this time’, thus putting hope to rumor that perhaps later one would come out at the 99$ level. Now thats a price point I can love. But seems the rumor is getting more and more distant. I’m sure an 8g 3gs will come out at some point, but it may be sometime around Christmas and I’m not going to wait that long.

So congrats Apple, you have yet again forced my hand to spend more then I wanted to.
