It only took 5 days. I think we are getting a little spoiled now because jailbreaking a new release in under a week is almost expected. Of course, this is just a minor update, so we should not be all that surprised.
There are two tools out there so far, QuickPWN and Sn0wbreeze.  I have no plans on upgrading to 3.1.3 since all it does is correct a fix with reporting battery life, and a minor one at that. And I would advise everyone who is not have major issues with their phones to skip this update, but if you just cannot help yourself, well there are two fixes out there.  They are both Mac based, but I imagine a PC fix will be coming at some point.

{update … I did not last more to 15 seconds. As soon as I turned on the phone, I wanted to enable WIFI and forgot I could not simply swipe to get the WIFI button. 15 seconds.  Yes, without jailbreak, the iphone is just… just.. andriod. XD  }

Now, on to the upgrade. Here is how I did it

1. I removed any application that I KNOW I will want not need once I upgrade.  There are two reasons for this.  First, I need to backup the phone, install 3.0 and thus reinstall my apps.  The more apps you have, the longer all this will take. I also cleaned out my music and photos to make the builds and restores faster. Plus, you will be surpised how much junk you have. I do this from iTunes BTW, not the phone.
2. Make SURE you have synced your address book.  Dont want to lose that.  If you have games, you should SSH into your phone and get the files. I do not have any games that I really care about, so I dont mind losing game data.  Same thing with Notes.  Make sure you copy them out.. By hand.. After 3.0 notes will be synced.
3. Ok, REALLY important. If you are using Folder, MAKE SURE YOU TAKE YOU ICONS OUT.  If not, you will lose them when you restore until you get SBSettings reinstalled. ( I blew this part
4. 2X check your sync settings on itunes and sync twice. Just in case.
5. Go to iTunes and check for updates.  It will offer 3.0.  Go ahead and install.

Ok.  So we are ready for jailbreaking.  All you need is either PwnageTool 3.0 or QuickPWN (not ready last I checked).  I used PwnageTool myself.  Basically this install worked just like PwnageTool always works but I still like to follow a tutorial, and I always turn to iClarified. Here is the link to PwnageTool 3.0 tutorial.

A few things the tutorial misses though..

• On step 3, click on Simple Mode if you do not plan on updating your baseband. Read this post. READ IT 5 TIMES!! If you plan on using something other then AT&T, then use expert mode.
• On step 4, double click, not single click to select your phone.
• I ran a generic PwnageTool, so I had to click on the DFU mode myself.  Make sure you unplug your phone first before you click on this button.  Why the iClarify tutorial does not have this must be because they used a slightly different version.
• Make sure you do this when you start iTunes and it asks to restore. ‘In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and click Restore.’  I forgot and had to go back and redo putting the phone in DFU mode and then reload the correct restore file.

That should be it!  Your phone should sync.  Then sync it again.

Next open Cydia, and update.  For some reason, I had to close and reopen it.  Now, go to search and find SBSettings.  BEST JAILBREAK APP EVAR!

Now.  Everything worked fine for me except for one step.  I forgot to take the apps out of folders, so I lost my settings button as well as many other buttons. So I had to do update Cydia and install SBSettings using 3G till I could unhide all the buttons again.

Now, my first impressions of 3.0 …. eh.  Its like nothing changed short of my first phone call was horrible.  However, I REALLY hoping that the iphone was resorting out where the towers are in my area. I have many other experiments with 3.0 and seeing what jailbreak apps I still need…. aside from SBSettings, PDANet  and Video of course.

REDSN0W PROVIDES SIMILAR FUNCTIONALITY TO QUICKPWN.

If you want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use ‘PwnageTool’ on Mac OS X.

1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
2. Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).
3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
5. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest version of redsn0w.
6. This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release
7. redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
8. redsn0w WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G (not the iPhone 3GS).

To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!)

.. ok now what does this mean?

For 90% of you who have jailbreak but are NOT unlocked, all it means is you can jailbreak your iphone 3.0, but NOT if you bought the new 3GS -‘and the ‘s’ is for speed! (haha). Anyway, some things to know.  As for me, I’m going to download and do a test run but not do the full install.  Instead, I’m going to run QuickPwn, most likely tomorrow.  I will post on it.

The USB speed is not any faster so remember to remove as many unneeded aps as you can before your last synch.  Also, once you upgrade to 3.0, remember to reboot.

Jailbreak your phone first before reinstalling your normal apps. It will make thing go faster.

I’m going to start my process tonight and will report as I have the last 3 times I jailbroke.  The next article will be… should I jailbreak? (edit) could not wait.  Will jailbreak tomorrow using quickpwn.

The Russian hacker Vortex has once again released an unofficial jailbreak at iPhoneApps.ru. I tried it on my iPod Touch with firmware 3.0 beta 2 and it works!

I have not tried it myself because I have not had the time to mess with 3.0, so I cannot confirm or deny it myself. However, Vortex is active and I’m usually inline to buy what comes from him. Normal warning in place of course, do this at your own risk, etc…  Also, remember, you have to reload everything when you do a fresh jailbreak.

Will be interesting when 3.0 is released how long a consumer friendly version will be out.

So I thought I would record my steps as I prep my 2.1 pwned phone to 2.2, then re jailbreak it again. Again, I want to caution you, anytime you do anything outside of the normal, approved, dictated processes that have been outlined by Apple, you are taking chances, so if you are averse to risk, follow Nancy Reagan’s advice and ‘just say no’.  Right, so on with it..

First off, you need to remember that when you update your phone, you will lose anything that has to do with jailbreak. Everything you installed, set up, or customized will be gone.  It will not be backed up. (This was one of the reasons I was not going to bother in the first place). I have a few apps on my phone that could mess up the standard backup, specifically categories and SBSettings. So, if you have categories, make sure you empty them out of all icons so that everything is on the phone’s ‘desktop’.  If you have apps in SBSetting, takes those out too.  Just in case.

Ok, next, get all you data off the phone that is not backed up for you.  In my case, its movies from Cycoder.  here are a few tools you can use..

Next, open Cydia and write down the apps that you added, or take a screen shot of those too.  Some Cydia apps, like SBSetting and triple click do not have icons, so just noting all the icons is not good enough.  You may want to also note other Cydia sources that you put in manually.

If you are lazy, as I am, take a screen shot off all the apps on your phone just so you know what got installed and what did not.  Should be interesting to see what does and does not work after this update. (you do not know how to take a screen shot?  Gezz.. Ok, read this..

Connect your phone and perform a full update on 2.1  Go get a beverage. When its done, make sure your screen shots got synced.  If you are paranoid, copy the images to another folder.

OK, now go ahead and close itunes, disconnect the iphone, reconnect the iphone, and reopen itunes.  It should ask you to upgrade to 2.2.  If not, you can manually do it via the menu by selecting iTunes -> Check for Updates.  Click though the pop ups and start the process… Ok, now get a snack to go with your beverage, this will take a LONG time. Took me about 25min to install.  It will restart the phone automatically.  Just let it be..

….Hmmm got that steve jobs saying ‘hello’ in Russian again. Whatever…

When its all done, you should be on iphone OS 2.2 with everything restored; apps, music, email accounts, etc…  I went though and checked most of my apps and they seem to work fine.  I also did a quick check to see how it takes to bring up igoogle.  4 to 5 seconds.  Before the update it was 6-7 seconds

So, everything seems in order… now time to jailbreak it!

I downloaded the latest .dmg for the Mac from here.. Make sure you get the correct tool.  If you are not sure, read this..

Ok, From here just follow the bouncing ball. We are on a Mac here, but Windows is about the same process.  Open up the dmg which should create QuickPwn for you.  Click on that and follow the instructions. Details on that here from 2.1, but they are the same steps..

Ok, don’t let this step freak you out.  Its simple enough.  You will hold the top button (power) and the home button at the same time for 5 seconds.  Then release ONLY the top button.  Keep holding the home button.

Why not?  I like it better then Apple logo actually.

I you see this.. Things are going well..

If everything went well, you should be greeted by a cute, reassuring kitteh letting you know all is right with the world.  Congrats!  You are jailbroken..  Now what??  Well if this is your first time, get some apps.

Tomorrow or the next day I will post my MUST haves for any jailbreaker.

So the question is: should you jailbreak?  If you have never jailbroken the phone, are happy with the apps you have so far, and cannot risk ANYTHING going wrong the phone, then no.  Don’t even bother. But for those of you who are looking to take the iphone to the promised land; record live video, custom graphics for everything (i.e. I use steampunk analog battery meeter), SSH, Master control of powering on/off (3G, WIFI, Email), Quake (yes, the full Quake) etc, etc, then perhaps this is the time. In September Steve Jobs said there would be another update.  I may or may not update again depending on if it fixed the bug of the $&#*( keypad staying on when on a phone call). On my next post I’ll talk about the apps I’ve downloaded.

My iphone is already at 2.0.2, so that is what I used.  To do this jailbreak, you need 2 files.

QuickPwnGui120.exe and iPhone 1,2_2.0.2_5C1_Restore.ipsw

The process was not perfect.  First off, since the mac version is not working, I used my laptop. When I first started the process, it would not work.  Why not? Because I did have itunes on the laptop!  So installed itunes and did a sync without music, pictures, address book or anything else.

Started the process again.

Once you are given the choice of what type of phone to pwn, I have the 3G, a nice ‘are you ready?’ button comes up with the steps you have to take.  Non of these steps are command line, but more of ‘can you follow basic instructions?’ type.   You will be asked to hold down the top power button (5 sec I think), then the home button (so both are held down (another 10 sec I think)) then let go of the top button while holding down the home button. (30 sec I believe) Think you can handle that?

Good.  Now, connect your phone to your PC and then turn the phone off.

The first time I tried it, it stalled on me for some reason. I tried it again and it worked great. A word of advice though, take your case off.  I have a pretty think rubber case and pressing and holding the home button got a bit tiresome.  Although it said to hold for 30 seconds, I was holding for a min and half till it rebooted.

So far, so good.  The reboot can take quite a while (1-2 min), so be patient. Also, as soon as your phone comes up, disconnect the cable.  It will not hurt anything to leave it plugged in, but mine did a power on/power off loop. Annoying.

Just to be safe, do a clean reboot.  Power off, power on with the phone disconnected.

You should be good!  On my next post, I’ll talk about the applications I have loaded.

Post Script…

Since pwning the phone, I’ve noticed the wake from sleep (turn on) is much slower as well as some of the more memory intenive OS apps taking a bit longer to load. Not sure what is causing it.  However, once the applications load, they work fine enough… known bugs not withstanding.

Based on the comments I’ve seen so far, there have been a few fails, but nothing tragic.  I’m going to research this more and then perhaps jailbreak my phone.  I’ll post again once if I do it.

1) Download QuickPwn
2) Run QuickPwn
3) Select iPhone 3G
4) Browse to the IPSW (you can download this file from iTunes – it is then found in (Vista) under: C:\Users\Name\Appdata\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
(If you can’t see the folder Appdata then adjust view settings…jeessss…)
5) Select Cydia/Installer/Boot Logo etc in QuickPwn
6) Go! (read instructions on screen)
7) Wait
8) Enjoy (should reboot in 2.0.2 with Jailbreak).
