* I just tried one of the apps, and it works great.  And that is not surprising because is coco, but still, anytime you go from one language to another there are risks.  But so far, so good.

  • 3 of the demo apps are free, 4 costs 99c.
  • This is not Flash10.  This is to create installed apps written in AS3. So even though its not a true browser plugin (so STILL no flash video) at least we can reuse assets and code from other projects to create iphone apps.  I would expect TONS of flash games to come to the iphone as well as Android and Palm Pre.
  • Also, this is not a true flash player where you can include other .swf files.  The code is native coco, so many of the tricks we used in Flash do not work here.  Figures.
  • However, since it native coco, I would expect the SDK will give us access to the hardware, camera, accelerometers, compass, etc.. So I expect to see some really cool AR apps in the near future.

Something else to consider.. Think of all the little games that are out there in flash already, especially the flood of new games that have been coming to facebook.   All of those games can now port over to the iphone (and android and palm) quite easily. And then add all the little flash games on tonnes of websites also making the port.  Since we are talking AS3, I would bet 30% of the games could be ported with a week of work or less (per game, not all the games.. sheesh).  Anyway, I expect a flood coming a month or so after the beta SDK comes out.  I have 2 apps in mind that I will port right off the bat!

Flash Professional CS5 will enable you to build applications for iPhone and iPod touch using ActionScript 3. These applications can be delivered to iPhone and iPod touch users through the Apple App Store.*

A public beta of Flash Professional CS5 with prerelease support for building applications for iPhone is planned for later this year. Sign up to be notified when the beta starts.

At the MAX 2009 show, they demoed a number of flash apps that are in the app store right now.  So, what are you waiting for? Download and test.  There are with the prerelease version of CS5, so do not expect to be blown away nor bug free, but still, its about time!!

A jailbreak (limited) App store! First off, I guess 4 or 5 days ago, Cydia released an application call… wait for it… Rock!  Umm.. what?  Yea, it called Rock!  NO IDEA why, but whatever..

What it offers is a nicely organized way to download paid and free apps.  There is a voting system as well. Even does something the App store does not; when you click on ‘What’s New’, it will tell you if you already bought this app or not. Not a big deal, but a nice touch.

Now this does not show everything you can get on Cydia, just the stuff they promote.  Still, I like it.  Now, what you have all be waiting for… screen shots!!

iphone 3.0 to give us remote controllers? Yea.. or at least, it better https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/03/iphone-30-to-give-us-remote-controllers-yea-or-at-least-it-better/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/03/iphone-30-to-give-us-remote-controllers-yea-or-at-least-it-better/#comments Tue, 24 Mar 2009 19:35:35 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=1320 Read More]]> zeemoteAt GDC yesterday, I walked past a display showing the ‘Zeemote’.  They had it working with a verity of phones (from the site: major manufacturers like Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG, Motorola, and, Samsung).  Missing of course?  The iPhone!  Why? Because it uses Bluetooth which the iPhone VERY poorly supports.

However, times.. they are a chang’in..

The iPhone 3.0 update is suppose to significantly improve Bluetooth compatibility. When I talked with the guys at Zeemote, they said they have already started looking into it.

What I expect to see very soon is iControlPad’s device gaining greater support.  Here is the video if you have not seen it..

Sweet eh? These are the guys I’m watching for game play, and zeemote for all other remote tasks. But like I said, Apple had BETTER insure this can be supported. Else, just one more reason for people to join the jailbreak ranks.

Now… where is that bluetooth keyboard we have been waiting for??

Review of Stanza as an ebook reader for the iphone https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/03/review-of-stanza-as-an-ebook-reader-for-the-iphone/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/03/review-of-stanza-as-an-ebook-reader-for-the-iphone/#comments Sun, 08 Mar 2009 04:27:27 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=1212 Read More]]> stanza2I wrote about this last week, how I did not care much for the kindle reader, and cared less about amazon crashing on me. (still have not determined the problem yet… been busy). It felt slow and a touch klunky. It crashed the first time I loaded it.  From what I read, the time is takes to actually read, going page to page is not that great either.

But I thought I would write a few quick words on what I do like.  The Stanza.

Whats great about this little app is .. well everything actually.  You can search, book, magazines, newspapers.   They have a great only library of over 100k books.  I was able to find ‘outliers’ for 9.99, although I was not able to find ‘The Difference Engine’. Read the Times, BBC, Wired etc.. and started reading ‘the time machine’ which is a sample book that comes with the app I believe.  Although I did find it odd finding the ‘tipping point’ in the category of Fictionwise.  Perhaps Fictionwise is not all fiction.

Navigation is simple enough..  The right side of the page advances, the left goes back a page and then center is the menu. Landscape/Portait switching is clean and pages load fast. Now, I cannot imagine there are as many books availble through Stanza as Amazon, but I can say this. I will check Stanza first, and then consider buying the book before I buy through kindle.  As least for now.

Airline barf bag as an iphone/ipod holder. I only included the one image, but you can see more on the website.  @AdamSigner brought up a point about it falling if you hit turbulence.  Eh.. The iphone is not all that heavy, and if you are really concerned, you can feed the audio line around the tray serving as a fail line like in rock climbing.  Else, try to remember to bring some tape. Now, if we can only get remote controls, we have ourselves a gaming console!  🙂

BTW, now the many airlines are providing WIFI in flight, you may want to think about VoIP too.  https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?s=voip

itouch as a phone? … Sure, all you need is WIFI https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2008/12/itouch-as-a-phone-sure-all-you-need-is-wifi/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2008/12/itouch-as-a-phone-sure-all-you-need-is-wifi/#comments Thu, 04 Dec 2008 19:57:33 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=751 Read More]]>

Just read in TechCrunch about a new itouch app by UK-based Truphone that allows you to make phone calls on your itouch if you have WIFI access. Sounds pretty good. Calls are free to other itouch users as well as other supported mobile devices and low rates to those outside the system, much like Skype. What is interesting to me here is idea of taking an itouch and getting near iphone capabilities.

Still missing is GPS, but check out this project adding GPS to the itouch and the first iPhone…

Past write up on iGPS and xGPS.

Now Truphone is not your only option.  There is Jajah and my favorite, Fring.

Past write up on Fring and saving money calling overseas.

So, between being able to make call, plugin GPS, all we need now is a way to connect a 3G card and we have all but incoming call iphone!
