Are we doomed to look on in envy as you iPhone users get to wallow in GPS self satisfaction? Well, for now, yes, but not much longer!
Enter the scene; iGPS360 and xWave’s xGPS project.
This has been a long running project to take a separate GPS module and connect it to the iPhone/iPod; app project which started before the iPhone3G came out. Based on the noise I’m hearing through the interwebs, they should have a complete solution ready for purchase before the end of October.
So far, I have not be able to determine if any of the GPS logging apps will work with this device, and I have an email in to Orange Gadgets to find out, but if not, I will write each of the authors I know who have apps out there and try to get the ball rolling. Worst case scenario would be to have the xGPS app store lat/long/eve/time points in a file on the iphone. From there it would be pretty easy to convert to GPX format and upload to google maps. As I learn more, I’ll update here.

Information on the hardware from orange gadgets can be found here.

Included with the GPS module is a 6ft USB-A to micro USB-B cable for on-the-go or at home charging.
