Does it show the SSD at all? I would check to see that it’s indeed being picked up by the BIOS and if not, check the cables.
Occasionally, Windows setup can chuck a fit when it discovers a drive with an invalid MBR/boot sector and won’t install to it. To fix this, you could try the following
1.Boot up Windows 7 disc.
2.When the welcome screen comes up on Windows Setup, press Shift + F10, which will display a command prompt.
3.Type “diskpart” (no quotes) and press enter.
4.Type “list disk” and press enter.
5.Hopefully you can see your SSD in the list. You should see a number identifying it. Now type “select disk X” (where X is the number identifying your SSD) and press enter.
6.Type “clean” and press enter. This will write a blank MBR, YOU WILL LOSE ANY DATA ON THE SSD if you did have anything on it.
Hopefully one of these tips helps :

Preview of the new Microsoft site. Metro with dynamic media response https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/06/preview-of-the-new-microsoft-site-metro-with-dynamic-media-response/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/06/preview-of-the-new-microsoft-site-metro-with-dynamic-media-response/#respond Sat, 30 Jun 2012 05:26:17 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=7460 Read More]]> Well this is a treat.  Via reddit I checked out a preview of the new Microsoft.com preview website.  Its pretty clear they are all in with Metro, and also all in with 1 view from many devices as demonstrated by the use of dynamic media response.

{Update}  Seems they have this redirecting now.  Shame.

The design calls all the elements from Metro you would expect, simply bold colors, no shine, no shadows, everything has a smooth movement to it, simple Segoe font family.

“Metro” is based on the design principles of classic Swiss graphic design. Early glimpses of this style could be seen in Windows Media Center.  Now the new Microsoft webpage will be following these designs.  But what is really interesting to me is the dynamic media response (DMR).

If you remember, Peter Yard caused quite a stir when he proclaimed the death of adaptive design (as well as DMR by implication). Many people, myself included, thought that was a bit premature and somewhat nonsensical since DMR is just a tool in web design and construction. What this tells me is Microsoft is really trying to telegraph that is intends to make Windows 8 about phones, tablets as much as it is about laptops and PC with 32 inch monitors… as I’m using now.  Its a big gamble to design once, work everywhere, but MS is coming late to the game, so this makes sense.  They have to take long strides if they want to be relevant. And this preview design shows they are fully committed.

Funny thing, you try to load it with a Mac, and get a ‘you need silverlight’ error.  Fail.

Check out the image gallery. You can see a few screenshots at various sizes.

Aero dies in Windows 8 and stops trying to copy Apple https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/05/aero-dies-in-windows-8-and-stops-trying-to-copy-apple/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/05/aero-dies-in-windows-8-and-stops-trying-to-copy-apple/#respond Sat, 19 May 2012 18:26:13 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=7209 Read More]]> I have been using Windows 8 for awhile now on my home computer. The first thing I noticed about windows 8 is how fast and clean everything feels.  It does not have the lipstick on a pig feel that was Windows Vista. After reading post on cnet, it reminded me as to why Aero was created, and why its now being dumped.  They were playing catch up to Apple.

Aero, a short hand I’m using here for the glossy reflective glass candy look and feel that was pioneered by Apple, was just that, a reaction to the success of Apple.  Somehow the designers at Apple can take the whole Candy look and make it work.  Windows, not quite as well.  Worse, all the computer resources needed to run Aero taxed some older and not so old systems.  I have a pretty powerful 8 core gaming desktop at home, and I do not run it. Now that we are coming up to Windows 8, its clear Microsoft has realized Aero needs to be dumped.

And I agree.  I like the idea of having a very clean simple design, not only because it appeals to me, but because it takes far less computer resources to support.  That means you do not need to have as powerful graphics card, memory both on the card and computer, and CPU and thus battery.  So by making things clean and simple, the rewards go far beyond the look and feel, but the whole on to off experience.

If you think that windows 8 Metro feels like something you would see on a phone or tablet, that is because it is.  Be starting design at the tablet level, including keeping things light for lesser powered tablets, we are benefiting every time we start or awaken our PC’s in windows 8.  Windows 8 starts almost as fast as a modern Mac and actually executes faster then a Mac.  By removing all the unnecessary overhead of the Aero system as well as other improvements, the system actually feels fast, clean and more importantly, NOT like a Mac.  The desktop experience still feel the same in general, but when I go from my Win8 PC to my Mac, I can feel that I’m using two different products, where before it just felt like both OS were the same, but a few styling differences.

It seems that Microsoft is committed to the Metro system and good or not, its a departure from the old way of doing things.  Since Windows95, it always seems Windows was playing catch up, for once it seems, they are trying to form a new path.  Fingers crossed.

HP TC1100 in popular culture https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/03/hp-tc1100-in-popular-culture/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/03/hp-tc1100-in-popular-culture/#comments Tue, 20 Mar 2012 19:56:17 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=6950 Read More]]> As a TC1100 fan, I was looking up installing Windows 8 on my machine.  Although installing the wifi card is a bit tricky you can still do it.  And for fun I checked up on the TC1100 wiki page only to see the reference to popular culture section deleted!  WTH?  So I grabbed an old version and placed it here.

BTW, if you are lucky enough to have one, and want to put Windows 8 on it.  Its not fully working yet. Many people are having issues with the wifi and so far the top control buttons do not work. But give it some time. I think Windows 8 on this tablet would be amazing!

At some point, I really should write a post on why the TC110o has the cult reputation that it does.  Its more then just the fact its both a convertible and a slate, and its more then just good design, and more then despite its age, the components are just good enough to keep it useful even today … but that will be another post another day.

If I can find some time, I may gather what the web has said about the coolness and cult value of the classic TC1100.

  • Biggest win. The TC1100 was used by Sheldon on the TV show Big Bang Theory.
  • The TC1100 was used by Paul Ballard in the Dollhouse (TV Series) second season episode Belle Chose
  • The TC1100 was used by Tom Cruise‘s character, Vincent, in Collateral.
  • The TC1100 was also seen in the movie Alien vs. Predator.
  • The TC1100 was also used by Dr. Cameron in an episode of House MD
  • The TC1100 can also been seen in the film The Island starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johannson.
  • The TC1100 was also used by characters in the TV show Alias
  • The TC1100 was also used by characters in episodes 18, 19 and 22 of season 3 and 4, and episode 13 of season 5 of 24
  • The TC1100 was also used by characters in the TV show CSI: Miami
  • The TC1100 was also used by Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin) in the TV show Bones
  • The TC1100 was also used by characters in the TV show My sweet 16 on MTV
  • The TC1100 was also seen on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in a skit with Jefferson Han
  • The TC1100 has been seen on the TV show “Las Vegas” in various shots around the bars.
  • The TC1100 was also seen on the TV show “Knight Rider” in various parts of the show.
  • The TC1100 was also seen on the in flight safety video for Singapore Airlines

I’m going to through this image of the iPad vs the TC1100 just for fun.  I would not call it an apples to apples (get it?) comparison, but I still dig it.

Tip #192 By pass the splash screen in windows8 with a click https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/03/tip-192-by-pass-the-splash-screen-in-windows8-with-a-click/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/03/tip-192-by-pass-the-splash-screen-in-windows8-with-a-click/#respond Sun, 18 Mar 2012 19:06:02 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=6938 Read More]]> One thing that bugs me about windows 8 is I have 2 screens I have to get pass to get to my desktop.  First the splash screen, or whatever its called, then the login screen.  Well I just found out by accident that if you click on the spacebar, that will execute the ‘slide open’ function to get you to the log in.  Still annoying I have to even do that, but way better then using the swipe function I used at the beginning.

What I would really like to see if the login screen and the welcome screen combined so I do not even need to swipe nor click, but I expect when microsoft fully release win8, there will be some sort of option, else I know someone will write a hack to take care of it.

A Fix for brightness, sleep and other keyboard controls not working in Windows 8 https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/03/fix-brightness-sleep-other-keyboard-controls-not-working-in-windows-8/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/03/fix-brightness-sleep-other-keyboard-controls-not-working-in-windows-8/#comments Tue, 06 Mar 2012 04:46:30 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=6829 Read More]]> This is just a consumer preview, so do not expect everything to work right of the box.  This morning I got an update for windows 8 and that loaded a few drivers (I expected) and suddenly my keyboard control keys started working.  Also I finally got the Sleep option!  Finally.  So if you having any issues, I recommend you manually go to the update, if it did not happen automatically for you.

Go to -> Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update and install the updates.  Odds are this will fix your issues.

If this time it does not fix your issue, give it 2 days and check back. It seems like there is an update everyday.

I’m going to live with this in my 4 year old tablet for a few weeks and see how it feels. You can read other windows 8 posts here.

How to create a bootable USB Drive to install Windows 8 https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/03/how-to-create-a-bootable-usb-drive-to-install-windows-8/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/03/how-to-create-a-bootable-usb-drive-to-install-windows-8/#respond Sat, 03 Mar 2012 07:52:56 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=6816 Read More]]> I want to install Windows 8 on my tablet but do not want to dig around to find my DVD player, so I decided to grab an old 4gig USB key and creating a bootable install for Windows 8.  There are two ways to do this.

The easy way is to simply download the Windows 8 Consumer Preview tool.  This tool will check that you have at least 4 gigs free on your machine, check to see what apps will or will not run under Windows 8 and finally allow you to create a partition, DVD or USB installable disk.

Now, if for whatever reason you cannot or do not want to take the easy route, you can download your own copy of Windows 8 and the manually create a bootable USB drive yourself.

First, get a copy of the Windows 8  iso file you want.

Next,

  1. First, you need a USB Flash drive (at least 4GB – any less and you can stop reading right here).
  2. You also need the Windows 8 Consumer Preview .ISO file – 64-bit download | 32-bit download
  3. You also need to download and install the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool available from Microsoft.
  4. OK, now you’re ready to rock. Pop the USB flash drive into a spare USB port and fire up the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool and browse to the .ISO file you want to use, and then click Next
  5. Click on USB device as the media type.
  6. From the next screen choose the correct USB flash drive from the drop-down box and then click Begin copying.
  7. The tool will now format the drive and then copy the Windows 8 installation files onto it. This will take some time, so be patient!
  8. Once the tool is done copying the data across, you’re ready to use the USB flash drive to install the Windows 8 Consumer Preview onto your hardware. When you’re ready to install Windows 8, insert the USB flash drive into a free USB port, and then run Setup.exe from the root folder on the drive.

That should do it.

How to Dual Boot Windows 8 on your Windows 7 machine https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/03/how-to-dual-boot-windows8-on-your-windows7-machine/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/03/how-to-dual-boot-windows8-on-your-windows7-machine/#comments Thu, 01 Mar 2012 18:26:02 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=6794 Read More]]> This is mostly a repost from teknobites. I took a few screenshots out, edited a few things, add a few others. The instructions for setting up dual boot for windows8 is pretty easy. If you have every setup a dual boot system before, you will see there is not much new here..

Before you start, there another option then setting up a dual boot:   You can install VMware Server or VirtualBox. You can create a virtual disk drive and have it point to the iso file. Then install Windows 8. This way you can run both side by side. (**You could even use a portable version of VirtualBox on your thumbdrive**)

Creating a dual book system is not all that hard,  all you need is the ISO file of the Windows 8 consumer preview, a new partition on your system and an USB drive or DVD for writing files to it.

Remember to back up your files before you do anything..  You never know.

Create a new partition

You need at least 20GB of free space to install Windows 8,  so if you have multiple or external drives as I do, then you can put the OS there, else if you only have 1 drive, then you need to make a partition.   Hit the start button and type partition, select “Create and format hard disk partitions”, it will open windows disk management tool. Although you need min of 20 gigs to run the OS, I would recommend that you at least set aside 50gigs for programs that will want to download later on. If you are really tight on space, then go ahead and use 20gigs.  So allocate 50GB or more space and format the new partition. If you have only one drive, right click on the drive and select shrink volume. After shrinking you should have at least 50GB space, select the amount of space and click Ok. Now right click on the unallocated space and click New Simple Volume. follow the instructions until you get Format Partition window, give it name and format. Now we are ready to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

Preparing bootable USB drive or DVD.

Now you already have the Windows 8 Consumer preview iso file, if not download it. I would recommend using a USB drive, 4gig should be enough. For writing to DVD use Windows 8 burn function or use something like ImgBurn software.

To use USB for installation you need a tool that can make the iso bootable, download this utility from Microsoft and install it. Open the tool and show the ISO image, on the next screen select USB, it will do the rest.

Installing Windows 8

Now reboot your system, based on your system at the boot time you should press F2 or other key to enter to BIOS. In the BIOS boot device options select to boot from USB drive or “External Device” depending on your firmware.

Now Windows 8 setup will load, follow the instructions, select the language of the installation and continue. The instructions are self explanatory. When it shows the screen of “What type of installation you want”, select custom and follow.

Select the new partition you made and continue to install windows.
System will reboot few times and will finish the installation. If all goes well, you should see the Metro style start screen.

After installing you can change the boot menu default, If you want to use Windows 8 regularly you can keep the boot menu default as Windows 8 CP. if you want to change it will show boot menu at the startup, there is a link at the bottom of the screen “change defaults or choose other options” using this you can set default as Windows 7.

And there you go. I’m going to do this on my machine in a bit.
