Sigh.. https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2011/04/iphone-5-will-not-have-4g-lte-sigh/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2011/04/iphone-5-will-not-have-4g-lte-sigh/#respond Fri, 22 Apr 2011 03:32:03 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=5026 Read More]]> Many of us really thought the next iphone, the 5 would be a 4G i.e. LTE. Well, seems that comments from Apple COO Tim Cook, who said that “first generation of LTE chipsets force a lot of design compromises,” during the Apple’s earnings conference call on Wednesday. Well, sounds like this is about as accurate as its going to get. Funny I really thought LTE would be with the 5, so if the iphone5 will have the same 3G capabilities, and most likely the same form factor, what is going to be so different?

Well rumor control says there will be a 8meg camera and the A5 chip which is suppose to make gameplay screaming… but is that really enough to make people upgrade? I’m not sure that is going to be enough… At least for me I know it wont be.

Quick update. Although there will not be LTE, t-mobile and sprint (and china?) should have support. Also hearing it may be called the iphone 4s.

The Palm Pre is dead. Your Epic Failure is now Complete https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2010/11/the-palm-pre-is-dead-your-epic-failure-is-now-complete/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2010/11/the-palm-pre-is-dead-your-epic-failure-is-now-complete/#comments Tue, 16 Nov 2010 22:38:24 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=3614 Read More]]> Yes, the plug has been pulled on the Palm pretty and Pixie. Raise your hand if you are surprised. So today Sprint has taken the Pre out of the store. Yes you can still find them in the Verizon store, but for $50 and $30 respectively with a two year plan. Not exactly getting the big demand. And what killed the Pre? Not the OS. The WebOS is actually pretty good and HP paid BIG bucks for it thinking it could be used for tablets, or slates. The hardware was not all that great, but not that bad either. No what killed it is no one wants to write apps for it. All the app developers are writing for Apple right now although the tide is shifting to the Android platform. I have said this before; although cannot find the post at the moment, but Palm has one shot at getting back in the game against Apple, Google and Microsoft, and they blow it with the worse advertaising compain ever. To add insult to injury, when someone tried to start a WebOSCamp like we have with the iPhone, the Palm people (mostly the legal people) kept getting in the way to the point that the founders lost interest.

Palm: You had a GREAT lead with a great product back in the day. Put out what I would consider the first really good mass produced smart phone in the Kyrocera 6035. Then you failed to take that lead and keep innovating and leading the market. FAIL. Then once you get a good phone you mess up the first community effort to get programmers and the WORST advert series ever. Palm, your Epic Failure is now complete.

As much of a Palm fan boy that I am, or at least was, I never thought for one moment about writing for the Pre. There is simply no market there. And I do not know a single person who wrote apps for it either. Pretty telling right? But like I said before, I do plan on buying a palm Pre just to complete my collection.

Want 4G speed iphone or iPad? Now you can use the iphone iPad on Sprint https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2010/03/want-4g-speed-iphone-or-ipad-now-you-can-use-the-iphone-ipad-on-sprint/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2010/03/want-4g-speed-iphone-or-ipad-now-you-can-use-the-iphone-ipad-on-sprint/#respond Sun, 21 Mar 2010 21:09:28 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=2773 Read More]]> The news has already swept across the interwebs a few days back, but I only just now started looking into it. So sprint has this device that will let you connect your iphone or iPad to the Sprint 4G network without jailbreaking your iphone. Yea, no jailbreak this time. 🙂 So how does it work?

Simple actually, you buy this little device, kind of like a USB mobile network dongle that all the networks sell, expect this has its own power supply and network system to let you access it like a wifi point. Cool eh? So if you are in a city that support Sprint’s 4G network, you can access on your iphone.

The Win? Lets say you live somewhere where there is not 3G coverage for AT&T (like over 70% of the country if Verizon is to be believed), or you live in San Francisco or New York *better known and cell purgatory. IF.. and this is a big If, you have Sprint 4G in your area, you can basically ignore AT&T 3G or edge for that matter, and have monster speed all the time. Also, if you have issues even getting a cell connection, but CAN get sprint, then you could set your phone to use Skype or Google Voice. An even bigger Win? Connect your iPad to this babby. Yea! now your talking. So I can basically get at home wifi speeds on the iPad anywhere. Nice. If they had a pay as you go place (which I could not find), or at least compete with AT&T’s iPad prices, I would think about this and perhaps not consider the iPad an ‘only at home’ device as I have been thinking about it.

But its not all Win as you would expect…

First, battery life. Keeping you iphone connected to this device on wifi could actually take your battery down a bit. I do not know how smart this system is for keep alive pings, but its something to test for. Second you have to keep two devices charged and finally and the big finally.. This ain’t cheap! We are talking another $60 a month for this service. Now if $60 is not a big deal to you, then this could be a win. In fact, if it supports more then one device, it would be a great little office tool for those in your office with iphones but poor or no 3G coverage.

Check out the video.. does not say anything, but eh, figured I would through it in here…

The Palm Pre pricing is out. A bit cheaper then the iphone.. Cheap enough? https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/05/the-palm-pre-pricing-is-out-a-bit-cheaper-then-the-iphone-cheap-enough/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/05/the-palm-pre-pricing-is-out-a-bit-cheaper-then-the-iphone-cheap-enough/#comments Wed, 20 May 2009 07:52:09 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=1470 Read More]]> palmpreMaybe. Its $199 if you take on a 2 year plan and send in a $100 rebate. I HATE rebates. Enough that it could turn me off from thinking about the Palm Pre, but we’ll see what the user experience is like for sending them in and getting the money back. Its like giving Palm a $100 loan interest free.

Still, the operational costs are cheaper.

..’an individual Sprint Everything Data Plan starts at $69.99 for 450 minutes and unlimited text messages and unlimited data, including the carrier’s various services, such as Sprint Navigation and Sprint TV’ … ‘requires a $30-per-month data plan and then it’s $39.99 for 450 minutes (with rollover minutes) and $20 a month for unlimited text messaging, so you’re looking at a total of $89.99 and you don’t even get the extra services’. From Bonnie Cha of Cnet

If the Pre can provide all it says it can, I will be looking to drop the iphone and give the Pre a try.. IF it lives up to the hype. As much as I complain about the iphone, it is still the best smart phone I’ve used in a long time. The Treo 600-650 was the last big improvement in smartphones, and I do not expect such a jump going from the iphone to the Pre. But, lower price and more services?? Perhaps. I’m near the end of my contract and I’ve been hearing that ATT wants to change their plans at bit. If it get more expensive, then done deal. I’m switching.
