SimCity 5 2013 finally getting offline mode https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2014/01/simcity-5-2013-finally-getting-offline-mode/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2014/01/simcity-5-2013-finally-getting-offline-mode/#respond Wed, 15 Jan 2014 16:42:34 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=9217 Read More]]> SimCity_2013_5_jailbreakAnd so they have finally released SimCity in offline mode. Well, its not out yet, but SimCity Offline is being tested at the moment. Looks like they have it right. You can play offline by yourself, you can install mods and save your games without ever touching the cloud. Here is a snip from the official announcement.

Offline is coming as a free download with Update 10 to all SimCity players. When we launch it, all of your previously downloaded content will be available to you anytime, anywhere, without the need for an internet connection. We are in the late phases of wrapping up its development and while we want to get it into your hands as soon as possible, our priority is to make sure that it’s as polished as possible before we release it. … In Update 10, you can still play solo in Regions on your own, or in Multiplayer with people from around the world. What’s new is the Single Player Mode, which allows you to play the game Offline by yourself. And because your saved games in this mode are stored locally, you can save and load to your heart’s content. Our team will be delivering a follow-up blog that will outline the full details in the near future so stay tuned.

Now what happened to all those statements that SC could ONLY work in the cloud? Well, they seem to have fessed up that it as just for storage and network games features. The comments from the post have your normal rants, but I thought this was interesting.

The original algorithms for the agents were traveling salesmen like algorithm which could only be calculated by throwing immense amounts of ram at them as well as general processing power. This is also what caused mass crashes early on in the games launch is the algorithm’s literally consume all of (even a supercomputers) power and thus the game would do that fantastic little cascade crash grinding to a slow halt. The new easier to calculate algorithms can be done on about any computer but at the expense of stupid traffic and stupid agents resulting in some of the glitchey messes we have seen recently that they’ve slowly been programming minor variations into the agents algorithm’s to remedy. This game has been one MASSIVE experiment in the world of planar graph theory and computations on them.

I’m have no idea how true this is; but I remember when the first hacks came out to allow people to play offline, they were not having performance issues, so I have to question this. But again, I did not do it myself. However, my thinking goes along with this comment.

Some people would rather just believe the lie.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/04/22/the-power-of-silence-why-the-…

We had SimCity running just fine, offline, within weeks of launch. We could even crack the tiny plot borders. Just couldn’t save. From debug mode, to the offline timer, to getfudgedpopulation, to “its not drm its an mmo,” to the BS that only fooled those who wanted to be fooled. SimCity was the most /popcorn worthy video game train wreck since Vanguard.

I actually bought SimCity right after launch because I couldn’t believe EA Maxis could screw up Wright’s vision up as much as everyone was saying they did. I was wrong. Only this story popping up on reddit got me curious enough to come back and see what Maxis was trying to spin now. Its nice that a Lucy-less Maxis is still plugging away at SimCity.

Pleasantly surprised EA has not shuttered the studio completely. But anyone thinking that finally letting me save my games on my PC is going to magically rebuild all the bridges they’ve burned? Well, some will believe anything now, won’t they.

Regardless, now that offline is coming, I will look into buying a copy. Something I never thought I would say.

EA to offer SimCity offline mode. One of the best comments I’ve seen https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2013/08/ea-to-offer-simcity-offline-mode-one-of-the-best-comments-ive-seen/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2013/08/ea-to-offer-simcity-offline-mode-one-of-the-best-comments-ive-seen/#respond Sat, 17 Aug 2013 18:56:59 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=8946 Read More]]> simcity5This is not new news, SimCity5 has had one of the worse release in recent memory. As a big SimCity fan, I was sadden that I just could not justify paying for this. I have been waiting for a good hack that will allow me to play offline, then I figured I would buy it. Although an offline hack now exists, its not a full hack and given the continued bugs with SC5, I still could not see myself making the jump.

So out comes this article month back on how EA is thinking of putting out an offline mode. I read the post and though, ok, lets see when they do it. Later on I returned back to this post and read what I though was a really wonderful comment from Casey Reece on Penny Arcade. This comment sums up my feelings on SC and why I just cannot bring myself to give EA a penny for this game.

Why this entire episode has been so vile is that EA essentially took a series that had never before had a bad entry in it; and then used it to redefine the very concept of a “bad entry.”

This would be the same if Nintendo released a 2-D side-scrolling Mario game in 1999 that controlled horribly. When it decided to actually be recognized by the console.

Every Sim City game from the first onwards showed such ambition and such love, that those who loved it (rightly) in return were always rewarded. This is a series that has built up nearly a quarter century of good associations, good press, and good feelings. It was a staple in gaming that stood above the concerns of most games (do they work, does it control well, and will you still enjoy it in a year), and delivered on our expectations time and time again. The jump in conceptualization between the first and second Sim Cities was in essence a complete rebirth. The third Sim City then took everything the second did (and much, much more) and polished it even further.

The fourth in the series was an amalgamation of everything that everybody ever wanted in a Sim City game, period. It just nailed it. And nailed it so hard, that they didn’t even consider creating a new one for over a decade.

Until they did. And the concepts for the new Sim City were absolutely worthy of the title. Even so far as to actually justify just naming it “Sim City” and not having to do the “5” afterwards – because that is how large the ambition was with this title.

The idea that every Sim was individually counted – that your factories produced actual goods you could track and watch move throughout your city – that the graphical interface and the statistics (graphs) interface had melded together into a more organic, living, and real entity. This, alongside your map and commerce being directly relate-able to other online Sim City players gave the promise and potential of this Sim City title an absolutely star-bound voyage. And Sim City games were always great – they always came through – and they always rocked the house with whatever it is they tried to accomplish.

Except for this one.

But not only that – this one got things wrong that even the first Sim City got right. Actual balance between commerce, industry, and residential. That the third Sim City nailed; how to get the proper Sims to the proper situations (fire department, police, etc. – they didn’t have robbers doing stick ups right next to the police station – not even in the first).

Then, it turns out, the entire “advanced” engine which is having so many difficulties with acting legit is because the actual “advanced” engine was a lie. It could track a few thousand of your Sims, and after that, everything was made up. The very anti-thesis to what makes a Sim City game.

Even if you got some of the world’s most creative minds in the same room, they couldn’t have possibly planned a better screw-up of one of video-gaming’s most classic franchises. What had always stood as the absolute proof of all good that could be accomplished with and through games was essentially shot dead in a debacle of being unable to connect – and then unable to get a refund. The good will of a quarter century took EA essentially one month to devastate, blow-up, and then salt into the earth forever more.

And now they’re coming out with a game that supposedly is the actual game they promised in the first place? How is that even possible? The entire game was a lie to begin with – did they now manage to actually build the engine they promised and failed to deliver after how many years in production – now just after a few months? Promising to bring in features that should have never been removed – and then having the absolute gull to ask money for it?

That upgrade should be absolutely free. To have the nerve to release an absolutely ruined product, and then when you’re on the verge of (supposedly) correcting your mistake, they ask everyone to pay for it again?

Are they serious? Have they no idea how much bad-will they’ve brought upon themselves with this train-wreck from the start? Are they really that callous? That stupid?

Of course. It’s EA. America’s worst voted company two years running, and, from what they’re showing, at least a few years more.

SimCity social… I did not like, but that does not mean it’s bad https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/07/simcity-social-i-did-not-like-but-that-does-not-mean-its-bad/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/07/simcity-social-i-did-not-like-but-that-does-not-mean-its-bad/#respond Mon, 09 Jul 2012 07:08:21 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=7490 Read More]]> It only took 10 min of trying SimCity Social to realize this is not for me. Perhaps because I’m a pretty hard core fan of the original game, this pop version is simply a turn off. Perhaps if I was 8 years old… Naw, not even then. Thats pretty harsh I know, but that just how I felt about it. And cheat codes, forget about it, at least for now. Already removed it. I can this being fun for other people so you should not read this as a bad review in general, because really, I never gave it a chance. But for a facebook, game, it looks like a facebook game. Clearly a lot of work went into this, but I think they went WAY to far to try to bring the social aspect into this, almost forcing it. Further I did not find a quick way to stop the game from posting on my wall, and 10 min to the game they were already trying to get me to spend real money to buy upgrades or increase my revenue to explore some random event that was clearly designed to occur at a time when I did not have enough money in the city coffers. Fail. Clearly EA spent a lot of money on this and has to make up for it somehow, but I found this to be a big turn off. But its free, so what the heck.

As for me, I continue to wait for SimCity2013. I REALLY hope there are no forced social element in this game, so I can tell you they will not get my $60.

Empire Builder allows the player to become one of history’s best architects and raise
an ancient empire from the sands. In the game, players will meet a series of powerful
pharaohs and help them in building an empire along the lush Nile River. In 30 fun
and challenging levels, players will not just construct some of Egypt’s most famous
monuments but also experience the rise of an ancient civilization.

“Empire Builder is an excellent building simulation game that gives players a taste of
the Egyptian heritage”, said Anila Andrade of 99Games. “The game also educates the
players on different kinds of pyramids and monuments as they build them in historic
locations in Egypt”, she added.

Key features of Empire Builder are:

– Play through 30 challenging levels
– Meet 10 powerful Pharaohs and complete their assigned missions
– Build houses, ports, schools, temples and a variety of other buildings
– Buy, sell and haggle to earn more gold
– Unlock new building plans as you progress
– Play Imhotep’s Challenge mini game for special rewards
– Activate 10 Amulet power-ups to help complete levels
– Use your magic staff to banish mummies and eliminate locust plagues
– Supports Game Center achievements

Empire Builder provides the first 6 levels for free, and allows you to download
additional levels through In-App Purchase.

SimCity Deluxe Tips and Tricks https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2011/05/simcity-tips-and-tricks/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2011/05/simcity-tips-and-tricks/#comments Mon, 02 May 2011 22:54:24 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=5082 Read More]]> I mostly play SimCity deluxe on the iPad now, but these tips apply for all SimCity games in general. BTW, I have not tried this for Android, but it should work.

 • Put your powerplant in a far corner of the board.
 • If you have a river near the centre of your world, build near it. Any housing near a river is attractive to the Sims. Be careful though, do not build such that you cannot grow from there.
 • Build 3×3 area first before building larger blocks
 • Do not build too big too fast, but make sure you have a good balance. I’ve found starting with 4 light housing blocks, 2 med and 2 dense blocks to be useful. 2 light and 2 med business blocks are good.
 • Build your industry zones along the edge of the world. Yes you need more road and it takes more money, but it will protect against lots of pollution. You will fight this battle throughout the game.
 • The Sims will scream for Police and Fire in the beginning. Ignore them. These service cost lots of money. Wait till you have solid income.
 • Build the Fire station first, then the police station.
 • You can never have enough water towers in the beginning. Plan for that.
 • Pay attention to taxes. This is your best tool for regulating income and growth.
 • Build parks to improve those borderline neighborhoods. Yes they take some money, but well worth it to turn a neighborhood around.
 • Don’t go nuts with roads. You will not notice at first, but they can really add up. As your town grows, make larger blocks. Plan for buses. I’ve only once used a train system and that was when my city was becoming like Tokyo.

Have other tips, let us know.

5 things SimCity really needs to fix.. now https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/01/5-thinks-simcity-really-need-to-fix-now/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/01/5-thinks-simcity-really-need-to-fix-now/#respond Tue, 06 Jan 2009 08:45:11 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=957 Read More]]> I really like SimCity for the iphone. I think they did a great job, esp with the UI. I still enjoy and lose far more time then intended playing it. However, there are a number of things that just really piss me off. Ok, so EA, if you are reading this, take notes.. Beginning rant…. NOW

<rant>

5) When I read a petitioner, do NOT dump me back to the map. What if I want to read another one? Give how many of those things that build up, its really annoying to have to keep nav’ing back threw the menus.

4) No rotation. Man, that really bugs me that I cannot rotate the map. I would think this would not be all that hard.

3) It is really hard to build a road across the river sometimes… well actually, almost all the time. Normally I get one shot to build across the river.. 2 if I’m lucky.

2) Its even HARDER to put power-lines across. I started a new city, because my original one keeps crashing, and I cannot build a power-line cross the river anywhere!! I have to now build two power plants.

and the number ONE issue…. yup you guessed it

1) The app still crashes! I have a city that I load. Wait a few min and then crash. Gezzz…

Now I realize this app is really pushing the iphone and I’m sure EA will get this sorted, but really!!

{UPDATE}

OK, it does seem to work a bit better but when you start it, it recommends you do a reboot before starting the game. Thanks, already figured that. Still takes awhile to start and save the game, but that is to be expected, however, I’ve been playing it for a bit and no crashes… yet.. Check back in a few more days.

{UPDATE 2}

Well, it crashed on me last night after an hour. I did not reboot before starting the game, which I would normally do if I think I’m going to play for any extended time, but I ended up playing longer then I thought. Also did not save… Sigh. Oh well, on the plus side, I did not like some of the things I did, so at least I was able to avoid my mistakes.

Yup, sorry, only good solution. What this does is make sure there is enough headroom for the app to operate. Like windows used to be in the old days (and perhaps again with Vista?) the longer the OS is running, the less stable it becomes. The 2.x OS is the same way. So after MANY trials and fails, I found that rebooting is the only solid way to made sure you will get a good hour of play time in. Also, make sure you save every now and again. Sometimes on a crash it will remember your last state, sometimes not. Don’t take a chance. When you finish a major build. Get into the habit of saving right off.

You’ll thank me later…. Or not depending on how much time you are waiting on this app. 🙂

BTW, I’ve been looking around for other cheats, no luck.. Only to these two seem to work..
