I have Google Apps so my GMail account is not .gmail.com.  No matter what I tried, I could not get Outlook to connect to my GMail account which has 2-step verification turned on. After doing quite a bit of research I finally figured it out.

You need to set up a separate password for accessing Google Apps including GMail.  So going through the normal procedure you would find on the web will not work, including the steps outlined on Outlook and Google’s own site.  To make this work, you need to go here..

https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en

Follow the steps and you will get a new password.  Then start the account process over again within Outlook.  BE SURE to remove any selections that save your password.   Enter the new password and Outlook should start working with your GMail Apps account.   Once this is working correctly, then you can turn the remember password options back on again.

Hope this helps.

GMail Locking up? Could it be .. Google Maps? https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/12/gmail-locking-up-could-it-be-google-maps/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/12/gmail-locking-up-could-it-be-google-maps/#respond Wed, 19 Dec 2012 05:34:36 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=8264 Read More]]> So your gmail and other Google apps have been acting up?  Screen locking up?  Mail not sending, then when it does you send out 2 or 3 copies?  I sure have.  The funny thing is this started for me the day after Google for iOS5. Now before any one jumps on this, I have no proof, and the issues I have seen and others I know having issues could be a coincidence, but it would make sense.  The Google maps iOS app has been so successful that its possible that Google was not prepared and perhaps they are hitting the servers a littler harder then they planned for.  Keep in mind the Google maps app passed 10M in just a few days.  So given that data is going both ways, sending maps as well as collecting traffic information is a LOT of data for Google to absorb.

If this is the case, can Google adjust? Sure, I would bet with a little tweaking of the servers they will be running smooth in a week.  But for now, I’m going to be keeping a close eye out.  You never know, could be even more downloads as non iOS 5 users like myself start using the app.

Gmail Down giving 503 error. I hope you have a backup https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2011/02/gmail-down-giving-503-error-i-hope-you-have-a-backup/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2011/02/gmail-down-giving-503-error-i-hope-you-have-a-backup/#respond Tue, 08 Feb 2011 05:07:53 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=4289 Read More]]> Well its happens to everyone at some point.  Well everyone who is responsible for servers.. They go down.  And today its Gmail.  Gmail has been up and down all day and finally a 503 was spotted.  The outage was very short lived, 5 min or so, but that’s for now.  However, what if you need access to email NOW!  Like when I was going to make a phone call, knew the phone number was in an email and Gmail was not accessible?   Fortunately for me, I have my Gmail and Outlook synced so that if it ever does go down, I have it backed up on Outlook. In fact, when I have Outlook open, I do not even notice when Gmail blinks out.

Now if you do not use Gmail in any professional manner, then this is most likely not worth bothering about. Gmail goes does down so infrequently that I cannot remember the last time I could not get to it.  However, Murphy’s Law says the ONE time it goes down, is the one time you REALLY need to get access. 🙂  So here is a link to synchronize your Gmail to Outlook.  Good for making backups too.

BTW, setting up Gmail to Outlook is pretty easy.  Here is tutorial I used..

Connect Gmail to Outlook.

GMail banned from Iran! They plan to build their own .. someday https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2010/02/gmail-banned-from-iran-they-plan-to-build-their-own-someday/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2010/02/gmail-banned-from-iran-they-plan-to-build-their-own-someday/#respond Wed, 10 Feb 2010 23:28:41 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=2615 Read More]]> Just read this off CNET.  Iran is blocking GMail in advance of the demonstrations set for Thursday. But just GMail?  Why not Yahoo?  Or Hotmail? Or other email systems? I would guess they figure cutting just one will disrupt enough communications to accomplish there goal. I’m also sure Twitter and Facebook will get blocked as well as SMS service a bit before and after thursday..   Now their excuse is that they are going to build a national email service.  First off, if they do I’m signing up!  I’ll never use it, but I want the email address.  🙂

But lets think about this for a second. If suddenly, without warning, my email was cut off, AND if that was my primary, or worse, only email system.  Then that means I lost all of my messages AND contact information. To get around the problem you can access other systems that read in your email from Gmail and still function. But what are you really accomplishing here but reinforcing the fact that you do not trust your own population.  I can imagine a few business people that rely on gmail being pretty pissed off losing past emails and contact information.

This will be interesting to watch.  I will guess most people will have found a workaround before thursday; and I also do not imagine a national system will be up anytime soon.

As for getting to GMail without using gmail, there are a number of solution depending on how its blocked.  For example, if mail.google.com is NOT blocked, you can at least read you email via RSS from this link.

https://USERNAME:PASSWORD@gmail.google.com/gmail/feed/atom

You can also use a service like NetVibes or other feed readers. As for sending?  If your on a mac, perhaps something like mailplane which SEEMS to work outside of the web client.

Gmail is down.. up.. down.. up.. ? Gfail Goat? https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2008/08/gmail-is-up-down-up-down-up-gfail-goat/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2008/08/gmail-is-up-down-up-down-up-gfail-goat/#comments Mon, 11 Aug 2008 22:24:54 +0000 http://perivision.wordpress.com/?p=140 Read More]]> Well, no one’s perfect.

Some on twitter are suggesting we need a gfail icon as with the fail whale. A few suggested a gfail goat. Sure, why not? So I whipped something up really quick.

Other thoughts and suggestions?

Also, I just heard from @mager via twitter that GMAIL basic HTML works. Did not test because the site came back as I was making the icon. HOWEVER… I have a lot of old duplicate email now. Grr….
