This augmented reality application that runs on the iPad and I will call an AR body browser, allows users the ability to turn on and off various layers of a 3D female human’s anatomy that is overlaid on top of a full size image of a woman.

Now the app is limited in its functionality. There is no searching for particular body parts or clicking on individual pieces (that I have seen so far), and these are not MRI scanned 3D models, but it is a cool full size example of how AR could be used in pre-med or patient education. A nice demo for the show Daqri

Google 3D Body Browser now on a Tablet via Android 3.0 https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2011/02/google-3d-body-tablet-android-30/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2011/02/google-3d-body-tablet-android-30/#comments Thu, 03 Feb 2011 18:18:28 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=4231 Read More]]> We wrote about Google 3D body browser before.  Well now you can have the same 3D experience using some of the new Power Tablets coming out like the Motorola’s Xoom Seen blow. The honeycomb OS release does much better 3D support and from the video below (via VentureBeat); it works pretty well.

Course this does not mean you will always see such good 3D performance, given the vast number of Android devices out there, your mileage will vary, but its still a nice demo and I can see a number of pre-med students really loving this. 🙂

If you are trying this on a less then stellar Android device, here are a few tips to improve view 3d on slower devices.

So check out the Video below..

Google Body Browser

I was at the WebGL Camp today at SRI and the WebGL team from Google gave us a sneak peak at a web3D medical application called the Google Body Browser. (video)  After watching the video at the link, one can quickly see the possibilities of how this could help anatomical education.

As promised; an initial review of the body browser.

Unlike other web based medical applications I have seen, no Flash, Java, or other plugins are needed. This application will run on any WebGL supported browser. Sure this means only developer or beta versions of FireFox and Chrome right now, but WebGL will be supported by all browsers in 2011 for sure.  Here is a direct link to the Google Body Browser. Here is the link to my video review of it.

Web3d Bone Application

Web3d application for learning the bones of the body.

This application really excites me. Last year I got the opportunity to work on an open standards based web3D medical app for learning the bones of the body. After witnessing how that app really helped students learn the bones, I am sold on using web3D for medical education.

Glad to see Google flexing the power of non-plugin based web3D for medical education. Expect a proper writeup review after the app is made public.
