I believe Shapeways' 3D interface was using X3D / Xj3D. Since you are interested in digital fabrication, check out http://www.ponoko.com. Run by a cool guy I know and recently partnered with Autodesk for their new product 123D (http://blog.ponoko.com/2011/05/03/autodesk-partners-with-ponoko-techshop-on-new-123d-design-tool/) . From digital to real is going to be huge!! Perhaps I am biased. 🙂
